City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh, my! What a wonderful story & an emotional adventure! I'm in love: with the characters, with the story & with the whole world of Shadowhunters created by Cassandra Clare. This is the kind of book that has me losing sleep because it is really hard to put down. There is never a good spot to close the book. It is non-stop and gripping. The author writes the perfect balance of everything I love in a paranormal story: action, tension, suspense, unexpected turn of event, mystery, LOVE, angst, humour, sarcasm, friendship, magic, FRUSTRATION... I am truly addicted to this series. Written for younger readers, it is also a GREAT read for adults (like me). It had me laughing, cringing, yelling, swooning, sighing & grabbing the sequel immediately after reading the last page. I'm a bit of a romance junkie and Cassandra Clare knows how to twist the romantic guts out of her readers.

"City of Bones" is the 1st book of 6 in "The Mortal Instruments" (TMI) series (see more info on other Shadowhunter titles below). Teen paranormal story about angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks & faeries, set in today's New York City. The main characters are teenagers (15 and up) and they are all absolutely wonderful. The witty banter and snarky remarks made me laugh. So many memorable quotes!!!

Told in the 3rd person, mostly explaining Clary's point of view but there are a couple passages from various characters' point of view scattered throughout the book.

Other books in Cassandra Clare's world of Shadowhunters:
- "The Infernal Devices" (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince & Clockwork Princess): Set in Victorian England. Some characters present in TMI are also present in TID.
- "The Bane Chronicles": 10 short stories about Magnus Bane, sold as individual ebooks, soon to be released as a collection in print format.
- "The Dark Artifices": due for release in 2015. Set in present time, after the events of TMI, with a California backdrop.

Synopsis:
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...
